See an incredible sunrise at Iceland’s Litli-Hrútur volcanic eruption

Standing in awe of Iceland's latest volcano eruption, captured in the early hours of the morning at Lítli-Hrútur on July 28th, 2023. After completing the 10km hike required to reach the eruption site, I sat for hours staring into the crater as it fizzed and boomed, shooting lava into the sky. The first sign of sunrise came at approximately 3:30am as the sky began to change colour, painting the clouds on the horizon a bright red. For the next 2 hours, Iceland put on an incredible show. This photo was taken shortly after 5am when the sun finally made it's appearance above the distant mountains. As it shone through, it illuminated the landscape, causing the smoke plumes around the volcano to glow in the golden light and creating this most breathtaking scene. This image is a self-portrait using the Canon R5 on a tripod and interval timer. The lens used was the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM.
